Israeli forces assault mourners carrying Al Jazeera’s Abu Aqleh’s body

Occupied Jerusalem (QNN)- Israeli occupation forces brutally beat and assaulted a crowd of mourners carrying the casket of Al Jazeera’s Shereen Abu Aqleh ahead of her funeral in the Old City of occupied Jerusalem.

Thousands of Palestinians have gathered for the funeral service, before Abu Aqleh is taken to the Mount Zion Protestant Cemetery, where she will be buried alongside her late parents in the next few moments.

Abu Aqleh’s body was brought from Jenin, where she was shot and killed by Israeli forces on Wednesday, to Jerusalem via Nablus and Ramallah, in a procession where thousands of Palestinians paid their respects.

Before they could leave the French Hospital premises to the Roman Catholic church in the Old City, the Israeli forces attacked the Palestinian mourners, pushing them back, storming the yard and firing stun grenades.

An Al Jazeera live stream captured the moment when the mourners nearly dropped Abu Aqleh’s coffin as Israeli forces beat them.

Moments later, the forces forced mourners to place the coffin inside a car and only allowed it to leave the hospital if unaccompanied.

Dozens of people in the hospital who wanted to join the procession were prevented from doing so by the Israeli forces.

When the casket finally arrived at the Roman Catholic church, dozens more supporters were waiting to attend Abu Aqleh’s funeral service.

Ahead of the funeral, the Israeli forces had also imposed a number of restrictions that Palestinians saw as an attempt to disrupt the service and limit the number of people attending.

They banned Palestinian flags at the funeral and imposed a ban on posters and the chanting of nationalist songs.

A three day memorial procession began on Wednesday, when Al Jazeera journalist Abu Aqleh was fatally shot by Israeli forces while reporting on a military raid of the Jenin refugee camp.
