Israeli court debates extension of detention for settler accused of spying for Iran

Occupied Jerusalem (Quds News Network)- An Israeli court on Wednesday held a hearing on the extension of the detention of a 22-year-old settler, accused of getting paid by the Iranian intelligence to carry out various tasks within the occupation state of Israel, reported Israeli media.

Elimelech Stern’s defense attorney argued for his release under restrictive conditions, presenting evidence suggesting he was unaware that he was in contact with a foreign agent. According to his lawyer, Stern believed he was dealing with a woman named ‘Anna’ from Toronto. The lawyer emphasized Stern’s lack of basic education and naivety, arguing that Stern did not realize the implications of his actions.

The settler’s relationship with ‘Anna’ began in May 2024, when ‘Anna’ introduced herself as someone who lives in Toronto and is well compensated for a traffic accident campaign and asked him to publish ads for payment. Translating the ad through Google translate, he realized that the meaning of the inscription is “we will move to another side, to the right side” and this did not raise his suspicions at all. Stern’s defense highlighted his lack of geographical knowledge, noting that he didn’t know Toronto was in Canada, separate from England.

The settler was also asked to hide amounts of money in different locations and to start arsons in forests.

The prosecution opposed his release, presenting evidence that Stern was aware of the nature of his contacts and continued the relationship until his arrest by the Shin Bet. They argued that Stern’s involvement in over 500 Telegram groups and his responses to ‘Anna’s’ offers of spy training indicated his awareness and complicity. In one instance, Stern expressed excitement about the training, stating, “I am excited, I will think about it for a day and we will talk.”
