Israeli authorities release Palestinian prisoner Mais Abo Ghoush
Palestinian female prisoner Mais Abo Ghoush was released on Monday after 16 months of detention inside Israeli prisons.
3 May 2020, the Israeli military court at Ofer sentenced Mais to 16 months in prison starting from the day of her arrest, 29 August 2019.
Abou Ghoush is a journalism student at Birzeit University and a writer who has worked to publicize the struggles of Palestinian political prisoners and Palestinian refugees.
She was kidnapped in a violent raid on her home in Ramallah in August.
The sentence also included a suspended sentence which begins from the day of her release, and is 12 months in prison for the coming five years. Furthermore, Mais sentence included a 2000 NIS fine as well.
Mais was subjected to harsh investigation and torture inside Israeli jails to the extent that her parents did not recognise her when the occupation summoned them to the center where Mais was imprisoned.
“The investigators brought a tired and exhausted girl whose appearance showed the harsh days she went through. I was angry at the time and told the investigators that this is not my daughter, but she smiled at me, so I calmed down. I started thinking of many questions about what she went through,” said Abu Hussein, Mais’s father.
