Israeli airstrike targets southern Beirut suburb, escalating situation
Beirut (Quds News Network)- Israel’s army has attacked the Haret Hreik area in the southern suburb of Beirut. According to a security source cited by Reuters, the strike aimed at a senior Hezbollah leader, whose fate remains unknown.
Reports from Al Jazeera, quoting a Lebanese medical source, confirm injuries resulting from the Israeli strike on the southern Beirut suburb.
The Israeli army stated that the attack in Beirut targeted a commander accusing him of being “responsible for the killing of children in Majdal Shams”. Following the strike, Yedioth Ahronoth reported that the Israeli army is on high alert.
The US State Department reiterated its unwavering support for “Israel’s security against threats backed by Iran, including those from Hezbollah”. The State Department emphasized the belief that escalation can be avoided and diplomatic solutions are still being pursued.
Axios, quoting an Israeli official, identified the target in Beirut as Fuad Shukr, responsible for all military operations of Hezbollah. An Israeli senior official mentioned on Channel 13 that if Hezbollah does not retaliate, Israel will not escalate the situation into a war.
