‘Israel’ releases former hunger-striking Palestinian detainee

Hebron (QNN)- Palestinian detainee Khalil Awawdeh, who went on a hunger strike for 172 days against his administrative detention, was released from Israeli occupation prisons on Friday, the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS) said.
Following his release, Awawdeh was taken to a hospital in Ramallah for medical checkup as he is reportedly unable to stand on his feet alone.
In protest against his administrative detention by Israeli occupation authorities, the 40-year-old prisoner began a hunger strike last year which lasted for 172 days and ended after prison authorities agreed not to renew his detention order which was due to end on October 2.
However, an Israeli court ruled to extend his detention following an alleged attempt to take the mobile phone he had at Assaf Harofeh hospital with him to the Ramla prison clinic where he was moved.
The father of four was arrested by Israeli forces from his home in the village of Ithna, south of the city of Hebron in the occupied West Bank, in December 2021.
Awawdeh has spent a total of 12 years in Israeli prisons since the early 2000s, including five years in administrative detention, split into two periods.
