According to the syndicate, the Israeli military has killed 183 journalists in Gaza within a single year—more than double the global yearly average, which UNESCO estimates at 82 journalists killed per year worldwide since 2013. The union urged international institutions and governments to take urgent, binding legal action to hold those responsible accountable and prevent impunity for these attacks on journalists. The union’s statement was echoed by UNESCO, which cited the 900 journalists killed globally since 2013, underscoring the staggering loss of journalists’ lives in Gaza within just one year. On Friday, UN Secretary-General António Guterres called the Israeli army's targeting of journalists in Gaza unacceptable and emphasized the need to protect journalists from ongoing attacks. Guterres urged international attention to the issue, highlighting the role of journalists in documenting and reporting the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. Since October 7, 2023, Israeli military assaults in Gaza—backed by US support—have resulted in over 145,000 Palestinian casualties, including thousands of children and women, as well as over 10,000 missing persons amid unprecedented destruction and a humanitarian crisis.Since October of last year, Israel has deliberately targeted journalists in an attempt to silence the truth, with more than 183 Palestinian journalists killed since the onset of the ongoing genocide in Gaza.
