‘Israel’ increases Palestinian female prisoners in its jails to 40
Ramallah (QNN)- Palestine Prisoners Centre for Studies said Sunday that the number of Palestinian female prisoners has recently increased to 40 after arresting two university students and a lecturer.
Spokesperson for the centre, Riyadh Ashqar, said in a press release that the centre has documented 10 to 15 monthly arrests against Palestinian ladies and young girls, some of whom are usually released a few hours or days later.
During the last two weeks, Israeli forces arrested lecturer of journalism at Birzeit University, Widad Barghouthi (57 years old), from Ramallah after breaking into her house. They also arrested journalism student and sister of martyr Hussain Abu Ghoush, Mais Abu Ghoush, after breaking into her house in Qalandya refugee camp.
Ashqar said that 27 of the female prisoners are sentenced to different periods, the longest of which was against Shatila Abu Ayyad from occupied Palestine and Shorouq Dwayyat from occupied Jerusalem with a sentence of 16 years imprisonment for each.
Other two prisoners were arrested under administrative detention; mother of two children Shorouq Al Badan (25 years old) from Bethlehem, who has been arrested since last June, and Alaa Bashir (23 years old) from Qalqilya, who has been arrested since last July.
The centre also said that at least 10 female prisoners suffer from poor health condition while IPS continue to deny them their right to get medical treatment. The case of wounded prisoner Israa Jaabis is the most dangerous among all cases. Israa has burns, which cover 60% of her body, and she lost eight fingers. She needs an urgent surgery, which has been delayed by the Israelis, putting her life at risk.
Among the female prisoners, there are 17 mothers, 5 students, and a mother of martyr, who has been punished as a revenge from her son, who has attacked illegal settlers and killed two of them before being murdered.
The centre urged the international community to pressure the occupation state to apply conventions providing protection for women, which have been breached by the occupation state on daily basis.
