‘Israel’ freezes administrative detention of Palestinian prisoner after 92 days of hunger strike

Occupied Palestine (QNN)- Israel’s High Court has decided on Thursday to freeze the administrative order for the detention of Palestinian prisoner Kayed Fasfous who has been on a hunger strike for 92 days.

The Palestinian Commission of Detainees’ and ex-Detainees’ Affairs said on Thursday that Israel’s High Court has frozen the administrative order for the detention of Fasfous as he has been on an open-ended hunger strike for 92 consecutive days against his unfair administrative detention without a charge or a trial in Israeli jails.

The court’s order does not release Fasfous from administrative detention – it simply freezes the order for the period of his treatment and observation, as his health condition has been deteriorating severely.

The court’s decision means that the administration of prisons and the Intelligence device are not responsible for his life, and turning him into an unofficial prisoner held at the hospital, under the guardianship of the hospital’s security instead of the jailors.

Fasfous’s family and relatives will be able to visit him at the Barzilai Hospital as a patient, rather than as a detainee, but his family are not allowed to transfer him to any place.

He was held before at the Al-Ramla Clinic, but was transferred to the Barzilai Hospital as his health has worsened.

He lost over 35 kilograms of his weight, and suffers from pain all over his body, his family said while expressing serious concern over their son’s health.

The last visit by the lawyers to Kayed in the prison of Al-Ramla Clinic was about 5 weeks ago, and the lawyer told Kayed’s family that their son was brought to see them while in a wheelchair, Khaled Fasfous, Kayed’s brother, said, adding that Kayed has poor visibility and inability to walk or stand.

The lawyer also told Kayed’s family that their son said he will not end his hunger strike until he is released from Israeli jails.

Khaled added the Israeli occupation prison administration practices a slow assasination towards his brother, Kayed, especially since he has not been transferred to a civil hospital or diagnosed by a specialist doctor.

Fasfous, who is a father of one, was arrested several times before, the last one was in July 2020. In 2017, he also entered a hunger strike in protest against his administrative detention in Israeli jails without a charge or trial.

There are now another 4 Palestinian hunger-striking prisoners in Israeli jails: Miqdad Qawasmi, Alaa Al-A’raj, Hisham abu Hawash, and Shadi abu Akaer.

Around 44 Palestinian detainees started hunger strike since the start of 2021, in protest against Israel’s detention without a charge or trial.

Administrative detention is illegal under international law, however, the occupation state uses it to repress the Palestinian people.

‘Israel’ routinely uses administrative detention and has, over the years, placed thousands of Palestinians behind bars for periods ranging from several months to several years, without charging them, without telling them what they are accused of, and without disclosing the alleged evidence to them or to their lawyers.

Thus, the hunger strike is a method of a non-violent resistance which the prisoners use to protect their lives and their fundamental rights and a response to the occupation racist policies which they face in the prisons.

There are 4,650 Palestinian political prisoners held in Israeli jails, among the prisoners are 520 administrative detainees held without charge or trial, 200 child prisoners and 39 female prisoners.
