Israel Extends Detention of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya

Occupied Palestine (Quds News Network)- An Israeli court has extended the detention of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza, for six months. The ruling, issued Tuesday by the Be’er Sheva Court, classifies him as an “unlawful combatant”, a term that Israel has been extensively using to describe abductees from Gaza.

Israel has used this law since 2002 to imprison Palestinians without charges or fair trials. Since 2005, it has specifically targeted Gaza’s residents, denying them legal rights.

Israeli forces kidnapped Dr. Abu Safiya in December 2024 after storming Kamal Adwan Hospital. Soldiers forced him out at gunpoint, destroying the hospital and putting it out of service.

His family reports that he has suffered severe torture and starvation in Israeli prisons. A lawyer who recently visited him confirmed this.

Dr. Abu Safiya paid a personal price for his dedication. On October 26, 2024, Israeli forces killed his son, Ibrahim, during a raid on the hospital. Earlier, he was injured in an Israeli airstrike but refused to leave his patients.

Since October 7, 2023, Israel has carried out a U.S.-backed genocide in Gaza, killing and wounding over 163,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children. More than 14,000 remain missing under the rubble.
