‘Israel’ advances plans to build settlement units in South Jerusalem

Occupied Jerusalem (QNN)- The Israeli authorities advanced plans to construct settlement units in the illegal settlement of Givat HaMatos in South Jerusalem.

The Israeli group, Peace Now, said the Israeli Land Authority announced on its website on Sunday that it had opened up tenders for more than 1200 new homes in Givat HaMatos.

The new plans would separate between Jerusalem and the West Bank and surrounding the village of Beit Safafa from all sides.

The spokesman for the PLO, Nabeel Abu Irdeineh, said the new decision is a continuation of the Israeli efforts to kill the internationally-backed two-state solution, adding that the new settlement units will not change the fact that all settlements will be removed and that they are illegal and in contravention of international law.

The plans come during a visit by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who started a visit to Europe and the Middle East, including Israeli illegal settlements, denying the results of the recent Us election.

It also may test ties with the incoming administration of Biden, who is expected to take a firmer tack against the expansion of illegal Israeli settlements after four years of a more lenient policy under Trump, who has largely turned a blind eye to the construction.
