Iran announces 3 days of public mourning following Haniyeh’s assassination
Tehran (Quds News Network)- Iran will observe three days of public mourning following the assassination of Hamas top leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on Wednesday, the state-run IRNA news agency said.
The Palestinian group Hamas confirmed this morning in a statement the assassination of the head of its political bureau Ismail Haniyeh in a “treacherous Zionist raid on his residence.”
Haniyeh had traveled to Tehran to attend Tuesday’s inauguration of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. This visit marked Haniyeh’s final public appearance.
Israel has not yet commented on the assassination incident.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced that it would investigate the incident: “We are studying the dimensions of Haniyeh’s martyrdom incident in Tehran.”
Iranian media reported that Haniyeh was killed by an “airborne guided projectile” that hit the residence where he was staying in the north of the capital Tehran at about 2am local time (22:30 GMT on Tuesday) at a special residence for military veterans.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, and Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps all promised to retaliate against Israel following Haniyeh’s assassination.
Israel will face “a harsh and painful response” from Iran and its allies, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps said in a statement.
“This crime showed that the Zionist gang of criminals, murderers and terrorists, without any regard for international rules and regulations, does not shy away from committing any criminal action to cover up the shameful failures of nine months of war in Gaza, which led to the massacre of tens of thousands of Palestinian women, men and children,” added the statement.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran will defend its territorial integrity, honor, pride and dignity, and make the terrorist invaders regret their cowardly action,” President Masoud Pezeshkian said in a post on X.
“The criminal and terrorist Zionist regime martyred our dear guest in our house and made us sad, but it also prepared a harsh punishment for itself,” read a statement from Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
