Hamas delegation visits Egypt to discuss issues, including prisoner exchange

Cairo (QNN)- A Hamas delegation visited Egypt on Sunday to discuss a number of issues, including the prisoner exchange, the movement announced the night before.

Yahya Sinwar, Hamas’s leader in Gaza, is part of the delegation which is headed by the movement’s leader, Ismail Haniyeh.

According to reports, the delegation will discuss ongoing efforts to reach a prisoner exchange with the occupation state of ‘Israel’, and continuing attempts concerning an agreement for calm between Gaza and ‘Israel’.

Zaher Jabarin, a member of the Hamas political bureau, said last month that the movement had provided mediators with a “clear road map” for a prisoner exchange agreement with the occupation state, and that Hamas was also insisting on the release of all ex-prisoners who were rearrested after being freed in the Gilad Schalit prisoner exchange deal in 2011.

The 2011 deal, brokered by German and Egyptian mediators, saw the release of 1,027 Palestinian prisoners in return for the IDF soldier Shalit, who was being held in the Gaza Strip.

“Freeing the prisoners of the last swap deal who were re-arrested will be a condition for the completion of any upcoming deal,” Jabarin said in a statement. “The occupation tries to obtain information about its soldiers without paying any price.”

A delegation of businessmen also headed to Egypt on Sunday to discuss a number of issues concerning the reconstruction process and transportation between Egypt and Gaza, according to local reports.

A delegation from the Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement is also expected to visit Cairo in the coming days after the commemoration of the 34th anniversary of the creation of the movement on October 6.
