Hamas condemns Tor Wennesland’s inaccuracies on genocide in Gaza, calls for accountability

Gaza (Quds News Network)– Hamas has condemned Tor Wennesland’s, the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, adoption of Israel’s narrative, during his briefing to the UN Security Council on the latest developments in the region.

In a statement, Bassem Naim, a member of Hamas’ political bureau in Gaza, urged Wennesland to retract his statements and adhere to his role as an international mediator guided by international law and UN policies. Naim criticized Wennesland for equating the aggressor with the victim, a stance he said violates international law and contradicts even the official position of the United Nations.

“Wennesland is adopting the occupation’s narrative, justifying its aggression against our people across all regions,” Naim stated. He argued that Wennesland’s claims, especially regarding shelters, civilian buildings, and UN facilities allegedly being used for military purposes, lack evidence and merely echo Israeli justifications for continued bombing and killing of Palestinian civilians. Naim pointed out that these accusations have never been substantiated and ignore documented instances where the Israeli military has used schools, universities, homes, and even UN facilities as military bases.

The Hamas statement further stated that Wennesland supports Israel’s rationale for its attacks on Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. According to Naim, these attacks, which have resulted in the deaths of more than 20,000 Palestinians in recent years, are unjustified and are part of a broader campaign against the Palestinian population. “Wennesland overlooks the reality that these actions are not about pursuing resistance forces but are a systematic attempt to suppress Palestinians living in their homeland,” Naim added.

Hamas also expressed outrage over Wennesland’s labeling of Palestinian resistance as “terrorism,” contrasting it with his description of settler violence, protected by the Israeli army and government ministers, as mere “violence.” Naim emphasized that this double standard ignores the systematic state terrorism inflicted on Palestinians under occupation.

Naim noted that Wennesland speaks passionately about the suffering of prisoners held by the resistance, yet he forgets that thousands of Palestinian prisoners, including women and children, have been enduring inhumane conditions for decades. He highlighted the recent revelations of horrific and unethical practices by the Israeli state against Palestinian detainees, particularly after October 7th, which have been widely reported.

The Hamas statement also criticized Wennesland for repeatedly ignoring Israel’s attempts to undermine the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). Naim argued that Israel’s efforts to dismantle UNRWA’s operations in Palestine, especially in Gaza, come amid one of the worst humanitarian crises the region has ever faced.

As the situation in Gaza remains dire, Hamas called for greater accountability from international actors, urging them to uphold justice and acknowledge the reality on the ground, rather than perpetuating narratives that serve to justify ongoing genocide against Palestinians.
