Germany to prohibit use of red triangle calling it ‘Hamas triangle’
Berlin- Germany’s House of Representatives voted to prohibit the use of the red triangle calling it ‘Hamas triangle’. The Senate is expected to approve the decision.
The majority of the Berlin House of Representatives voted in favor of banning the red triangle, a simple arrow icon, used in Hamas’ videos to highlight targeted Israeli military personnel and vehicles.
The House of Representatives called upon the Senate to “prohibit the use of this symbol in advance of any assembly requirements” claiming that it represents a “direct threat to Jews and to people who fight for Israel’s freedom and security.”
The opposition parties Greens, Left, and AfD did not vote for the motion. Vasili Franco of the Greens said it goes too far.
Leftist deputy Niklas Schrader criticized the motion, stressing that the targeted symbol has a long history and is also used by other organizations that find themselves in danger of criminalization.
Since 7 October, Germany has taken an aggressive stance to defend Israel and its genocide in Gaza. Last month, its parliament passed a bill obliging people applying for naturalization to affirm Israel’s “right to exist” ad in April, the government banned British-Palestinian surgeon Ghassan Abu-Sitta from entering Germany to address a Berlin conference about his work in Gaza.
Also, Germany’s second largest party Alternative for Germany (AFD) (A Nazi party) has advanced a bill demanding to deem postcolonial studies antisemitic.
