Germany Ties Future Arms Shipments to Israel to “Assessment of the Humanitarian Situation in Gaza”

Berlin (Quds News Network)- Germany may halt future arms shipments to Israel based on “an assessment of the humanitarian situation in Gaza,” according to Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul.

In an interview published Friday in Sueddeutsche Zeitung, Wadephul said Germany is reevaluating its military support to Israel in light of the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

“We are examining this and, if necessary, we will authorize further arms deliveries based on this examination,” he stated.

He also questioned Israel’s conduct in Gaza and whether it aligns with international law. “The humanitarian situation is one of the factors we are taking very seriously,” he added.

Germany has long been one of Israel’s largest arms suppliers. In 2023 alone as the occupation state initiated its genocidal campaign, Berlin approved over €326 million ($350 million) in weapons exports to Israel — a record high and more than 10 times the amount in 2022.

Much of this increase came after Israel launched its genocide in Gaza in October 2023. German arms have included components for warships, ammunition, and communications technology.

However, mounting international pressure and reports of Israeli war crimes — including targeting civilians and blocking humanitarian aid — have forced some European governments to reassess their role.

Wadephul’s remarks mark a rare public signal that Germany’s political support may not remain unconditional. Rights groups and German civil society have urged Berlin to suspend all military exports, citing complicity in violations of international law.
