Genocide Scholars Declare Israel’s Gaza War Meets Definition of Genocide
Gaza (Quds News Network)- The world’s top genocide experts have issued a stark warning. The International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS) has passed a resolution stating that Israel’s war in Gaza meets the legal definition of genocide.
The association’s president, Melanie O’Brien, confirmed the decision on Monday. O’Brien, a professor of international law at the University of Western Australia, said the resolution is a “definitive statement” from experts.
Eighty-six percent of members who voted backed the resolution. The association has more than 500 members worldwide.
The resolution states that Israel’s policies and actions in Gaza fit Article II of the 1948 United Nations Genocide Convention. That convention requires countries to act to prevent and stop genocide.
The scholars’ statement lists killings, starvation, forced displacement, and deprivation of aid among the acts that constitute genocide. It calls on Israel to stop “all acts that constitute genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.”
The Israeli foreign ministry has not responded to the resolution. Israel has repeatedly rejected reports of genocide. It claims that its crimes in Gaza are acts of ‘self-defense.’
Israel is currently fighting a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague.
Israel launched the genocide in Gaza in October 2023 after a military operation by Hamas, in which the resistance movement captured Israeli soldiers and colonial settlers.
Since then, Israeli attacks have killed more than 63,000 Palestinians. The bombardment has destroyed most of Gaza’s infrastructure. Nearly every resident has been forced to flee their home at least once.
A global hunger monitor, used by the United Nations, says parts of Gaza are now in an Israeli-made famine.
Ismail Al-Thawabta, head of the Gaza government media office, said the resolution supports evidence presented at international courts.
He added that the vote “places a legal and moral obligation on the international community to take urgent action to stop the crime, protect civilians, and hold the leaders of the occupation accountable.”
The genocide scholars’ association, founded in 1994, has recognized nine genocides in history, including Rwanda and Srebrenica.
International rights groups and several Israeli NGOs have already stressed that Israel is committing genocide. Last week, hundreds of UN staff urged Human Rights Chief Volker Turk to describe Israel’s war in Gaza as genocide.
The resolution adds pressure on governments and international bodies to act. The Genocide Convention requires states to prevent, punish, and stop genocide.
For Gaza’s civilians, the question remains whether the world will respond to the Israeli live broadcasted genocide in Gaza.
