The harsh realities of war have compelled Gaza’s children to seek work, assisting their displaced families in the face of worsening economic conditions amidst the ongoing brutal war.
On January 8, 2024, Palestinian journalist Abdullah Abyad shared a video featuring a girl named Safaa selling hibiscus tea to support her family, expressing a heartfelt wish for the cessation of the ongoing war.
On December 23, 2023, another displaced child, Feras, from the Zaytoun neighborhood in Gaza, was captured on video by Al Jazeera as he wandered among the tents of refugees in Rafah, selling tea and coffee.
Feras, despite his young age, shoulders the responsibility of his family, stating, “I sell tea and coffee to help my siblings. We fled from Zaytoun without clothes or anything, and the money I earn goes towards buying essentials for my siblings.”
Feras shares the challenges he faces, such as lighting fires and obtaining expensive firewood due to the unavailability of cooking gas, emphasizing that he prepares everything over an open flame.
As the year transitioned from 2023 to 2024, journalist Mohannad Al-Khatib showcased on his Instagram page scenes depicting the challenging lives of children in displacement camps in southern Gaza.
On December 18, 2023, a video circulated featuring two Palestinian children selling salt with the aim of securing their daily sustenance and providing for their families within the refugee camps in Rafah, southern Gaza.
Children constitute 47% of Gaza’s population, totaling 2.2 million people. Since October 7, 2023, the Israeli military has waged a destructive war on Gaza, resulting in over 26,000 martyrs and 63,740 wounded, mostly children and women, until today.
