France elections winners promise to recognize Palestine

French left-wing party La France Insoumise (LFI) leader Jean-Luc Melenchon (C) delivers a speech next to French leftist La France Insoumise (LFI) party Member of Parliament Adrien Quatennens (C-R) and French-Palestinian lawyer and founder of the Refugees Camps Observatory (Observatoire des Camps de Refugies - OCR) and on France's leftist-wing "La France Insoumise" (LFI) party’ list for the upcoming European Parliament elections Rima Hassan, during a conference rue d'Arras, in Lille, northern France, on April 18, 2024, after their controversial conference on Palestine was again banned, which the LFI leader denounced as "an abuse of power". Citing a risk of "disturbance to public order", the Prefecture of Nord banned the conference, which was to be held in a private room. The University of Lille, where it was initially scheduled to take place, had already banned it, expressing concern about "the serenity of the debates", following Iran's recent attack on Israel. Paris (Quds News Network)- President of the Parliamentary Bloc of France Insoumise, Mathilde Panot said the bloc will recognize the State of Palestine within the next two weeks. Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of the France Insoumise party, also stated that “We must recognize the state of Palestine as it is one of the available means for us to exert pressure.”

The statement was made following the surprising results of the exit polls, which projected that the left-wing National Popular Front (NFP) will be the biggest party in parliament, with the far-right National Rally (RN) – which came out on top in the first round – down in third place.
