Five European Countries Traded Weapons with Israel Despite Gaza Genocide
Gaza (Quds News Network)- At least five European countries made arms deals with Israel in 2024, even as the death toll in Gaza soared past 50,000, Público reported. Despite ongoing charges of genocide and war crimes, arms sales and purchases continued, based on official data from the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT). The Czech Republic and Serbia exported weapons to the Israeli government this year. Meanwhile, Poland, the Netherlands, and Greece imported Israeli-made arms. These deals took place as Israel carried out a brutal offensive on the civilian population in Gaza. According to reports submitted to the ATT Secretariat in Geneva, the Czech Republic sent 158 assault rifles to Israel in 2024. Serbia, a country seeking EU membership, authorized the export of 24 long-range artillery systems to Israel. Poland bought 442 revolvers and pistols and 23 rifles from Israel. Greece imported 310 pistols and 30 rifles. The Netherlands received six light machine guns and one submachine gun. These transactions contradict the spirit of the ATT, signed by 116 countries, which prohibits arms deals with states involved in crimes against humanity. Spain, also a signatory to the treaty, recently took steps to halt arms deals with Israel. The Spanish government canceled a license allowing the local firm Pap-Tecnos, a subsidiary of Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, to manufacture 168 Spike LR2 anti-tank missile systems. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has called on EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to impose an arms embargo on Israel. His appeal clashes with the interests of other EU partners who continue arms trade with Tel Aviv. In 2023, EU countries approved 655 licenses for arms exports to Israel, worth a total of €948 million. Germany led with €326 million, followed by Greece (€183 million), France (€167 million), and Romania (€59 million). In total, 23 European countries exported arms to Israel in 2023. Human rights groups, including Amnesty International, have warned that countries supplying weapons to Israel risk complicity in genocide. Amnesty called on the EU and UN Security Council to impose immediate arms embargoes on Israel, saying continued sales make suppliers morally and legally accountable.
