EU welcomes decision to hold elections in Palestine

European Commission spokesperson for foreign affairs issues Peter Stano welcomed the decision to hold legislative, presidential and National Council elections in Palestine.

“This is a welcome development as participative, representative and accountable democratic institutions are key for Palestinian self-determination and state-building,” Stano said in a statement released on Saturday.

He added, “The EU has in the past years consistently supported and funded the work of the Central Elections Commission in order to prepare for holding free, fair and inclusive elections for all Palestinians. The EU stands ready to engage with relevant actors to support the electoral process.”

He also stated that the EU calls on Israeli authorities to “facilitate the holding of the elections across all the Palestinian territory.”

Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas said that a legislative, presidential and National Council elections would be held in the coming months, starting with legislative elections on 22 May, as part of a warming of ties between Fatah and Hamas.
