EU Commissioners to Adopt New Measures Against Israel Over Gaza Genocide
Brussels (QNN)- European Union commissioners will adopt new measures against Israel on Wednesday amid the ongoing genocide in Gaza.
“Tomorrow, during the College meeting, commissioners will be adopting a package of measures on Israel,” Commission spokesperson Paula Pinho said Tuesday during a briefing.
The plan includes suspending certain trade provisions under the EU-Israel Agreement and sanctioning extremist government ministers and settlers.
The update came after EU chief Ursula von der Leyen pledged measures against Israel in her annual State of the Union address last week, including “extremist Israeli ministers” and settlers, a suspension of bilateral support for Israel, and a suspension of Israel’s preferential access to European markets.
“What is happening in Gaza has shaken the conscience of the world,” von der Leyen said.
“We will propose sanctions on the extremist ministers and on violent settlers. And we will also propose a partial suspension of the Association Agreement on trade-related matters."
Meanwhile, a United Nations Commission concluded in a report published Tuesday that Israel has been committing genocide in the Gaza Strip.
European nations like Ireland, the Netherlands and Spain have increasingly called for the EU’s ties with Israel to be reassessed in the wake of the war in Gaza.
This follows a report by the European Commission that found “indications” that Israel’s actions in Gaza are violating human rights obligations in the agreement governing its ties with the EU, but the bloc is divided over what to do in response.
The EU’s association agreement with Israel is a framework for trade and political relations. The bloc is Israel’s largest trading partner, accounting for nearly a third of Israel’s global trade, according to EU data.
The calls for suspending the deal come as a number of countries have announced they will recognise the state of Palestine in response to Israel’s continuing onslaught on Gaza.
Israel said it has terminated the humanitarian activities in Gaza of Doctors Without Borders, known by its French acronym MSF, after it refused to provide a list of its Palestinian staff over concerns for their safety and a lack of assurances on how the information would be used by Israel.
Encyclopaedia Britannica removed Israel from its educational materials for children and replaced it with Palestine. Following pressure from a pro-Israel lawyers’ group, Britannica reverted to using Israel.
