Since launching its war on Gaza, Israel’s military has repeatedly attacked schools housing Palestinians who had sought shelter in the buildings after being forcibly displaced from their homes. UN and aid agencies say that between October 6 and December 15 of last year, there have been at least 95 incidents involving attacks on school buildings in Gaza. The Israeli targeting of shelters has included shelling, direct shootings, killing forcibly displaced people and their families, or making them leave schools-turned-shelters under fire and/or with orders to evacuate. These schools are then burned or otherwise destroyed by Israeli forces in order to render them uninhabitable and stop displaced people from returning to them. Mahmoud Basel, a member of Gaza’s Civil Defence, slammed what he called the world’s silence as Israel continues to attack schools-turned-shelters in the enclave. “Attacking and targeting the schools are ongoing crimes committed by the Israeli forces. The entire world is watching silently as our shelters and schools, which host displaced people, are being targeted,” he said.At least 8 civilians were killed and others injured this afternoon when Israeli fighter jets bombarded the Abu Halawa School in Jabalia, northern Gaza.
