Egypt’s president Morsi dies during court hearing
Cairo (QNN)- Former Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi, the first democratically elected head of state in Egypt’s modern history, died on Monday aged 67 after collapsing in cage of a Cairo court while on trial on political charges, Egyptian state media reported.
The ousted Morsi asked to speak at the session, and the judge gave him permission.
He then reportedly fainted in court and was later pronounced dead.
Egypt’s public prosecutor said there was no evidence of marks or injuries to his body but investigators would conduct a full autopsy and examine courthouse video for evidence. Rights groups including Human Rights Watch said that his death is a proof that authorities were denying Morsi proper medical care.
Morsi had in previous leaked tape said that his life was in danger.
Morsi was elected in the only democratic elections in Egypt’s modern history in 2012 after the 2011 revolution ousted dictator Hosni Mubarak. He was overthrown in a coup by the Egyptian military, who installed current President Abdel Al-Sisi as the leader.
