Daily Telegraph, News Corp Attempt to Provoke Anti-Jewish Incident at Sydney Arab Restaurant

Sydney (Quds News Network)- A confrontation broke out at Cairo Takeaway, a Middle Eastern restaurant in Sydney’s Newtown, after a team from News Corp Australia and Daily Telegraph attempted to provoke an anti-Jewish incident. The restaurant, known for its pro-Palestine stance, stressed that the media group staged the encounter.

CCTV footage shows a man wearing a Star of David cap entering the restaurant. Staff served him tea without issue. Moments later, he moved to another part of the café and lingered for two minutes, raising staff concerns. A waitress stepped outside and found a Daily Telegraph reporter, photographer, and cameraman waiting.

A heated exchange followed. The waitress confronted the journalists, calling their presence “out-and-out intimidation.” She stated that they were attempting to fabricate antisemitic remarks, saying, “You picked the wrong restaurant to try this shit in.”

NSW police investigated after the waitress reported feeling intimidated. The investigation concluded with no criminal charges. The restaurant’s chef, Talaat Sehia, said the waitress was left “distraught” by the incident.

Daily Telegraph editor Ben English denied any attempt to provoke an incident but admitted the situation “could have been better handled.” He claimed the team was reporting on rising antisemitism in Sydney.

Restaurant owner Hesham El Masry rejected this explanation. “I’m pretty certain it was a planned operation,” he said.

A News Corp insider, speaking anonymously, told the Guardian that newsroom staff were disgusted by the incident and frustrated that there were no consequences.
