Canada’s chief human rights commissioner resigns following Zionist campaign
Ottawa (Quds News Network)- Canada’s newly appointed Chief Human Rights Commissioner, Birju Dattani, has resigned from his position before officially starting his role. The resignation comes in the wake of a Zionist-led campaign against him, sparked by his criticisms of Israel’s crimes against Palestinians.
Dattani announced his resignation via a LinkedIn post, stating, “I have agreed to resign as Chief Commissioner of the Canadian Human Rights Commission, effective today.”
“I remain a steadfast believer in the Commission’s work, mandate, and its importance to our democracy.”
Dattani’s appointment in June was met with fierce opposition from several pro-Israel organizations, primarily due to his previous statements and participation in events critical of Israel. Notably, he was accused of drawing a comparison between Palestinians and the prisoners of the Warsaw Ghetto, as well as supporting the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement and participating in Israel Apartheid Week.
Despite an investigation clearing him of anti-Semitic beliefs or bias against Jews or Israelis, the campaign surrounding his appointment persisted. The investigation finally took issue with Dattani’s failure to disclose his use of a second name, Mujahid Dattani, during the application process, a detail that was used to ask Dattani to resign.
The Canadian Human Rights Commission operates independently from the federal government and addresses human rights complaints against it. Dattani’s resignation has sparked a broader conversation about the influence of Zionist groups in Canadian politics and the ongoing struggle to balance free speech with political sensitivities.
