Bolivia’s coup government to re-establish diplomatic ties with ‘Israel’
Sucre (QNN)- The right-wing coup regime in Bolivia said Thursday it will restore diplomatic ties with the occupation state, a decade after President Evo Morales severed relations because of an Israeli military offensive in Gaza back in 2009.
Speaking to the media Thursday, Bolivian Foreign Minister Karen Longaric expressed hope that reestablishing ties with the occupation state will “lead to positive aspects for both sides and contribute to Bolivian tourism.”
Israeli foreign minister, Israel Katz, welcomed the Bolivian announcement.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has actively worked for a long period of time to promote the renewal of the relationship, also with the help of the Brazilian president [Jair Bolsonaro] and minister of foreign affairs, with whom I recently spoke on the subject at the U.N. Conference in New York,” he said. “The departure of President Morales, who was hostile to Israel, and his replacement by a government friendly to Israel, allows the fruition of the process.”
In 2010, Morales formally recognised Palestine as an independent and sovereign state within the 1967 borders. He also declared Israel a “terrorist state” following the war on Gaza in 2014.
The move comes over two weeks after Morales, Bolivia’s first Indigenous president, was forced out by a military coup and sought asylum in Mexico to be replaced with right-wing Senator Jeanine Añez, following a disputed national election.
