Bolivia Joins ICJ Case Against Israel Over Gaza Genocide
La Paz (Quds News Network)- Bolivia has officially joined South Africa’s case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), accusing Israel of violating the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide through its ongoing offensive in Gaza. The ICJ announced the South American nation’s intervention in the case on Wednesday, making Bolivia the latest country to support the proceedings. Other nations backing the case include Colombia, Libya, Spain, and Mexico.
This move comes after Bolivia severed diplomatic ties with the occupation state in November, condemning the “disproportionate” nature of Israel’s attacks on Gaza. At the time, Israel attacked Bolivia’s decision as “a surrender to terrorism.”
In a landmark ruling on January 26, the ICJ ordered Israel to take all necessary steps to prevent acts of genocide during its assaults in Gaza and called for “unimpeded access” for UN-mandated investigators to assess the allegations. Despite these legally binding rulings, Israel disregarded the court’s orders. In its latest submission, Bolivia argued that Israel’s “genocidal war” continues unabated.
While the ICJ’s rulings carry legal weight, enforcement remains a challenge, as the court has no direct mechanism to compel compliance. A separate ICJ advisory opinion issued in July deemed Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory “unlawful” and urged for its immediate cessation.
The ongoing genocide in Gaza has killed at least 42,010 people, most of them women and children, according to official figures, which the United Nations deems reliable.
As Israel’s genocide in Gaza continues, so too does its campaign against Lebanon, which has resulted in over 1,150 deaths since September 23, 2023.
