Biden says he will oppose any Israeli attacks on Iranian nuclear sites

Maryland, US (Quds News Network)- US President Joe Biden stated that he will oppose any Israeli strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities, following heightened tensions in the region. In remarks delivered after a call with Group of Seven (G7) leaders, Biden emphasized the importance of a “proportional” response to Iran’s missile strikes on Israel.

While Biden expressed full support for Israel’s ‘right to defend itself’, he warned against escalating the situation. “All seven of us agree that they [Israel] have a right to respond, but they should respond proportionally,” he said.

This comes after Iran launched missiles at Israel on Tuesday in retaliation for the assassination of senior Hezbollah and Hamas leaders by Israeli forces. Biden’s administration has been urging Israel to act with restraint, while coordinating new sanctions against Iran with G7 nations, which include Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom.

Israel had conducted limited ground operations in southern Lebanon. Airstrikes by Israel earlier in the week targeted Hezbollah’s leadership, including its chief, Hassan Nasrallah. The Israeli government is also considering broader actions, including potential strikes on Iranian oil infrastructure, but Biden has cautioned against targeting Iran’s nuclear sites, warning that such a move could dangerously escalate the conflict.

The White House reaffirmed its commitment to Israel’s security. “The G7 unequivocally condemns Iran’s attack on Israel, and President Biden stands in full solidarity with Israel and its people,” read a statement from the White House.

US officials, including Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell, have reiterated that there must be a response to Iran’s strikes, but stressed that the region is “balancing on a knife’s edge,” and any response should be measured to avoid further destabilization.

At the United Nations, US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield issued a stern warning to Iran, stating, “The Iranian regime will be held responsible for its actions,” and cautioned against any further strikes on the US or Israel.

The G7 leaders are expected to announce additional sanctions on Iran as a way to further pressure Tehran amidst the escalating crisis initiated by Israel.
