Battle-tested tips: Gaza’s survival tactics for Lebanese neighbors

As Israel’s attacks intensify in Lebanon, many Palestinians displaced in Gaza are sharing their hard-earned advice with the people of Lebanon. Having lived through countless Israeli bombings, blockades, and the constant threat of death, Gazans are offering practical and emotional guidance to Lebanese civilians facing similar horrors by the same perpetrator.

Prepare a Survival Kit

One of the first suggestions comes from Noor, a resident of Gaza who urges Lebanese people to prepare for the unexpected. Noor advises: “Prepare a bag with clothes for all seasons—summer, winter, spring, and fall. Secure a solar energy source if you can, and invest in a radio, batteries, and solar-powered lights. Ensure your medication and a first-aid kit are ready, and stock up on essential food items and bottled water. If you don’t already know how, learn to make bread—it could save you when there are no supplies.” This practical preparation, Noor stresses, could make the difference between survival and desperation in times of total siege.

Stay Home, Don’t Flee

Basel Najjar offers a strong warning: “Don’t evacuate.” His sentiment is echoed by Linda, who adds: “Die in your own home rather than flee. If you listen to people and leave your house, you’ll face worse than death, and end up sleeping in the streets. Once you’ve fled, you’ll be wishing for death.”

Mohammed Nihad, a native of northern Gaza, reflects on the brutal reality he faced: “Don’t evacuate. I’ve lived through every kind of bombardment, extermination, missiles, gas, and all kinds of deadly weapons you can imagine. We were hungry, drinking dirty, salty water. But by the grace of God, we’re still standing on our land, waiting for relief. Just keep your faith in God strong.”

Keep Memories Close

When fleeing may become necessary, some people still hold onto a deep attachment to personal belongings. Hind advises: “Take everything you love—your favorite clothes, the glasses you cherish, things that hold sweet memories like photo albums and notebooks.” Similarly, Hanaa emphasizes the importance of taking photo albums, as these are irreplaceable tokens of happier times.

Avoid Fear and Stand Firm

Amid the chaos of war, Noor once again offers profound emotional advice, urging the Lebanese people not to succumb to fear: “Don’t be afraid, even though fear is a natural response. But I ask you not to spread it among yourselves, as fear won’t delay death. Stand firm in what you believe in. Remember, all this will pass, and Israel will fade away. The land will remain for its rightful owners, no matter how long it takes.”
