Despite claims of opening the sea for fishing, Israeli navy still harasses Gaza fishermen
Gaza (QNN) - Israeli naval units detained today three Palestinian fishermen caught sailing northwest of Gaza City shore a day after Israel reportedly lifted a week-long total sea blockade on Gaza, according to fishermen.
They said that the Israeli navy opened fire at the fishermen’s boats while sailing six nautical miles into the sea across from Gaza City and detained three sibling fishermen from the Baker family who were taken to an undisclosed location and had their boat impounded.
The attack on the fishermen came a day after Israel announced that it would allow fishing rights for Palestinians up to nine nautical miles in the central and southern parts of the Gaza coast and six miles in the northern parts. Israel imposed a sea blockade on Gaza last Saturday following outbreak of cross-border hostilities.
Two Palestinians, including a 14-year-old boy, were shot and killed by Israeli settlers on Tuesday in the village of Al-Mughayyir in the occupied West Bank. A total of three Palestinians have been killed so far today by Israeli settlers across the occupied territories, including two children, amid a spike in settler violence against Palestinians.
Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot has urged the EU to impose sanctions on Israel ahead of a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg, joining seven EU countries, including France and Sweden, in the call. He also slammed the Israeli assault on Lebanon as “totally unacceptable.”
France and Sweden have co-signed a paper urging the European Union to ban imports from illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank, and to consider tariffs and tighter import restrictions on such goods.
